YouTube support WebM format, combat Flash Video

April 21, according to media reported, YouTube announced yesterday that all new uploaded videos on its servers will be converted into WebM format. This action of YouTube gives a heavy blow to the Adobe’s Flash video format.

WebM format is an open source video format developed by Google used VP8 video codec and Vorbis audio streams, get great support of Firefox 4, Opera 10.6 and Google Chrome. Because the announcement of the YouTube that videos uploaded to the site would be WebM format video in future, which will inevitably put pressure on other browsers such as Apple’s Safari and Microsoft’s IE, force those browsers also offers WebM format video local playback .

YouTube have decided to convert all videos to WebM format, will also reduce Adobe’s Flash video format popularity. Google also announced that it will gradually convert all Flash format videos previously YouTube stored to WebM format. It is said that it has converted 30% of YouTube videos into WebM format.

In addition to convert video to open source WebM format, Youtube also reiterated that it will develop their own HTML 5 video player. HTML 5 video tag supports many formats, including the VP8 video signals encoding and decoding of WebM.
